Greeting of August, 2003
Without radical intervention, Japan is heading for catastrophe. Given this crisis, I feel unable to just stand idly by. We should never simply accept the tragic situation that is Japan today, in which small and midsize companies fail in their thousands and as many as 100 people take their own lives each day because of the economic missteps of the current Administration.
Even if what we are seeing today is a result of the choices made by Japanese people themselves, I cannot as a politician ignore the situation. We seem to have lost the traditional Japanese spirit of harmonious coexistence, and instead have copied the American approach of favoring only the strong in society, leaving the weaker members to fend for themselves. The result is the devastation of Japanese society and its economy. It makes me wonder about the future direction of Japan.
I feel strongly that now is the time for us to restore and rebuild a strong and beautiful Japan, a country that is rich in material possessions and in spirit. For the sake of our children and our grandchildren, I am prepared to do whatever is necessary, no matter what the personal cost may be.
We should create a society in which it doesn't matter if you are strong or weak, because we will all support each other. A society in which all members can feel joy, and in which honest effort is rewarded.
The practice of politics is not something that can be done in isolation of public opinion. I believe therefore that I must make every effort to ensure that as many people as possible understand the kind of Japan that I want to create and the specific policies that I want to introduce, especially emergency economic measures.
In visiting this website, I invite you to join with me in thinking about this nation and its future. Please don't give up on politics. Rather, give us your frank opinions and your questions. Naturally, we are ready to accept any criticism.
If each of you is prepared to take responsibility for your own choices, and to act as the catalyst that sets history in motion, then my dream will be fulfilled.
As a politician, I am determined to act without hesitation. I will not be ashamed of myself or my place in history.
Rather, I will be like the cherry blossom, which reflects the Japanese spirit and the Japanese soul.
